“SURPRISE DEGREE: Loida Guillen Strong earned one of the 3,900 degrees UCF awarded during summer virtual commencement ceremonies. She kept her pursuit of a doctorate in nursing a surprise to her mother. Originally from the Dominican Republic, her mother aspired to be a doctor but dropped out of medical school to help care for her siblings after her father died. When Loida’s surprise was revealed, her mother fell to her knees in tears. This is a powerful reminder of how transformational a college degree can be for students and their families.”
